In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. ~ Genesis 1:1 NIV

We have finally entered that time of year. We have celebrated Thanksgiving and Christmas. Gluttony was carried out in all realms. We’ve made, and broken, our resolutions. We have put away decorations until next year. And we have collapsed into our chairs to relax and accept the fact that a new year—2020, amazingly—is here.

But have we ever taken time to begin the new year by looking back to the beginning of the very first year? I don’t mean the first year of your life. Or the first year of marriage. Or the first year of a job. I’m talking about the first year of the world. The world He created and wrote about in His Word.

Have we ever taken time to begin the new year by looking back to the beginning of the very first year?

Genesis 1:1 tells us that “in the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.” And Psalm 90:2 (written by Moses) tells us that “before the mountains were born or you brought forth the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God.”

God wants us to enjoy His world from beginning to end. And no matter what life brings, no matter how evil intrudes, He has the perfect plan for each of us.

Above all, He wants us to live lives redeemed by Jesus Christ. He wants us to see the scarlet thread of redemption that runs through the whole Bible, be it the blood of the lamb sacrifices or the blood of Jesus on the cross, washing away the sins of the world.

May the Lord give us fresh beginnings each day, not just the beginning of the year, so that we will honor Him and worship Him always. To Him be the glory…
