You Said “How Many Hairs,” Lord?

Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from the will of your Father. And even the very hairs of your head are numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows. ~ Matthew 10:29-31 NIV

There is something about these verses from Matthew that make me gasp each time I try to comprehend what Jesus is telling us. Even the hairs of our head — ALL of them! — are numbered, and Jesus knows them all. Wow!

If we have a headache, God knows which hair has the pain. He knows that Hair #25 is turning gray. He knows that Hair #45 just fell out. Every hair is important to Him. The whole bunch of them. #1,250. #5,693. #20,001. He knows.

Just as He knows the name of every sparrow, every star, every lily. He knows every detail in what we face right now. And He offers us His comfort, forgiveness, peace, and strength. His heart breaks over our fears. He knows every tear that falls from our eyes. And He is always there to comfort us through the pain.

Yes, it’s a scary time. But He has warned us that these times were coming. Maybe He’s still “warning” us. Or maybe this is the FINAL step of our journey to Heaven. Whatever the purpose, God is guiding us through it. He will be with us no matter how many hairs we have on our heads. And He will ensure our safety, always. He is the light at the end, awaiting our arrival. 

We don’t know how long or how rough our journey might be to get there. But, when we do arrive at journey’s end, we will understand without a doubt that eternity with our Lord lasts forever.
